Tree City began in 2005 as an urban greening group helping Vancouver residents improve their own neighbourhoods through trees.
Our Mission:
- To engage citizens in the creation of a healthy environment through the planting and care of trees.
Our Goals:
- Provide leadership and expertise to community groups, businesses and individuals to improve the environment with trees.
- Enhance urban food security and agricultural engagement with fruit trees and edible landscaping.
- Help make the Vancouver region a world-class model for citizen stewardship of the environment by connecting people and trees.
Our Focus:
Our most recent project aimed to help the City of Vancouver reach one of its key Greenest City 2020 goals to grow the urban forest. We teamed with the Environmental Youth Alliance to design, test and manage a new program called TreeKeepers which helped residents plant nearly 9,000 trees in just 2.5 years. We also promoted greater awareness of the value of the urban forest, built a database of thousands of tree enthusiasts, taught 72 volunteers basic arboriculture skills through a “train the trainers” Citizen Forester program and led educational hands-on lessons in six public schools.
